Keep Moving
Contributed Member: Nicole Chan
Date: The project was carried out on a weekend afternoon in September 2022
A mask installation was designed at New York City Union Square Station, one of the busiest stations in the city. The project is an experiment on intervening space, exploring the relationship between people and design, and the interaction between design and space.
The mask installation responds to the pandemic in which people are required to wear masks on public transportation, yet most New Yorkers do not follow the instructions. Using masks as materials, the words “Keep moving” are hung up in the entrance of the subway station to catch people’s attention. It symbolizes “Keep moving with your mask on”. Two boxes of masks with independent packaging are put next to the words and encourage viewers to get a mask before traveling on the subway. Considering most New Yorkers walk past the subway station quickly, some masks are taped to the handles for grab and go.
